You find out which server someone is on from their BattleMetrics sessions: most sizeable Rust servers are tracked there, recording who joined and when they left. You can dig through battlemetrics.com by hand, or paste a Steam profile link or SteamID into RustRecon. With Pro, the report shows the current server if the player is online, or the last server and when they were seen there.
Two different questions
"Which server do they play on" usually means one of two things:
- Where are they right now. You want to follow them, check on a neighbour, or know whether you have time before they log in.
- Where do they usually play. You want to know which project they come from, how long they have been there, and whether they are worth teaming with.
The first is answered by the current session, the second by the server history with hours on each server. Both come from the same source, but you read them differently.
Method 1. Steam status
Open the player’s Steam profile. If they are in game and have not hidden their activity, it says "In-Game: Rust". That is usually where the useful part ends.
- Steam rarely exposes the server address: only on public profiles, and not reliably even then.
- "In-Game" shows up even when the player is idling in the main menu.
- Plenty of people go Invisible or hide their activity.
So Steam tells you whether Rust is running, not where they are playing.
Method 2. BattleMetrics by hand
Search the player’s name on battlemetrics.com/players and open their page. You get the servers they played on, the time spent on each, and first and last seen dates. If they are online right now, that shows too.
The trouble is the search. Rust names are not unique: a common name returns hundreds of players, and BattleMetrics only lets admins with RCON access search by SteamID. You have to pick out the right person by servers and past names. We cover how in finding a player on BattleMetrics.
Method 3. Lookup by SteamID
Paste a profile link, SteamID64 or name into RustRecon. The report finds the player on BattleMetrics and matches their past Steam names against the names seen on servers, so you do not end up with a namesake. With Pro you see:
- The current server and how many hours they have logged there.
- The last server and when, if they are offline.
- The server list with hours, first seen and last seen dates.
If you search by name, the report asks whether the player is on a server right now and lets you type that server’s name. It cuts the namesakes down fast. If you have a profile link, start with that: see how to find a player’s SteamID.
| Method | Current server | Server history | Private profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam status | rarely | no | no |
| BattleMetrics by hand | yes | yes, but name search only | yes |
| RustRecon by SteamID | yes (Pro) | yes (Pro) | yes |
How to read the server list
A list on its own says little. Look at three things.
- Where most of the hours are. That is their main project. An evening or two on a random server means nothing.
- When they first joined it. The first seen date shows how long they have been on that project. A self-proclaimed regular who first joined a week ago deserves a closer look.
- Aim servers. The report shows hours on aim servers separately. That is normal for someone who trains their aim, and it helps you read their combat stats.
When the server cannot be found
- The server is not on BattleMetrics. It leaves no sessions. If someone only plays there, they will look offline.
- Steam did not name the server. The report then says the player is in Rust with no server named: the game is running, but there is no address.
- A fresh name in a name search. BattleMetrics only learns a new name once the player joins a server with it. Check while they are in game, or search by SteamID straight away.
Instead of checking by hand, track the player with Pro. The Telegram bot tells you when they join a server, leave, or switch to another one.
If the question is not "where" but "when" (what hours they are usually on, or when their whole group is offline), read how to tell if a player is online and about squad Recon.
