Rust player hours
How to find a Rust player’s real hours
Why the number in a Steam profile and the number played on servers disagree, how to check a player’s hours, and what to do with a private profile.
These are two different numbers
Steam counts time while the game is running — whether you joined a server or left Rust sitting in the main menu. Servers count something else: time actually spent on them. So one account has two hour counts, and they rarely match.
How many hours count as a lot
There is no threshold, and any number offered as one is made up. What matters is not the number but its consistency: two thousand Steam hours against forty server hours is a question; two thousand against eighteen hundred is an ordinary person who sometimes minimises the game.
What to know about hours
What inflated hours are
Inflating hours means leaving the game running so the profile looks experienced. The reason is simple: many projects gate entry on an hour count, and a player with two thousand hours draws less suspicion. The tell is a large gap between Steam hours and the sum of server hours.
How to check a player’s hours
You need both numbers at once. Steam hours are in the profile when it is public. Server hours come from BattleMetrics sessions — open data the servers publish themselves. The report puts both numbers side by side and works out the gap for you.
Hidden hours: when the Steam profile is private
Hidden playtime is not a secret. A private profile hides Steam hours but not server sessions: the server saw the player and recorded it. So even behind a private profile, how much someone actually played and when is visible. Inflated hours cannot be checked here — there is nothing to compare against — but the playtime itself is known.
Inflated hours: how to tell
Hours are inflated in two ways: Rust is left running in the main menu, or an idler program pretends to be the running game. Steam counts both, because it measures how long the game ran, not how long the player spent on servers. Servers do not record that time, so the gap between the two numbers gives it away.
